Living with my aging parents
When you watch talk shows addressed the topic of their aging parents, it is usually about the bills hospital, doctor visits, and juggling personal time, now that your parents are no longer drive, about parent / child role reversals.
The only issue I've ever heard is dealing with everyday life and aging parents juggle all the different personalities home. Older people have very strong, dogmatic minds of their own, at least my parents do.
For example, my husband and I have a special sense of decoration that we prefer. Micro black fleece green sofas, large chairs professor-like, a beautiful cherry wood table to eat, and the old Renaissance paintings, all very ancient, as in style.
Mom has a taste totally different, and Dad does not. position mom The Great Depression inspired, of course, is to use and reuse everything. She refuses to throw the towel, whatever the rope. She loves washcloths, even after starting to stand in their own corner of the shower, filled with funky mildew smell. It will be the use of soap Dial, nothing else. They do shower once a week (whether or not they should) and dad uses his pocket knife to cut any hair from the nose, cuttings, flowers, and home I just baked bread. I always make sure to cut the bread before exposing them to eat while the knife ptomaine Dad did not dive in the first contact with anything edible.
As I watch my parents interact, I find myself biting my tongue as a mom waits on hand and foot dad. He sits on his big cock, looking at his watch Fox News Channel, doing his puzzles, reading the paper, and pontificating on everything that is wrong in the world (If only they wanted to make his way!). She was spoiled and she knows it. Now they are retired, my mom says she wishes she had not done everything for him. She complained to me about his impotence (eeewww!) The transmission of information much more than I do or would ever know. Fortunately, first, when he busts in on a political roll, she told him to keep his calm about flying. But on the other hand, it is generally shown in front of our eight year old daughter. Boy, she needs treatment one day … Come to think of it as I do now.
I returned a day and discovered that my mother had put a tablecloth printed with flowers on the dining table, with contrasting striped orange and brown mats. At first I thought she was joking until I saw the joy of children, as in his eyes. She was so proud of his purchase fashionable collection JC Penny city. (Come to know later, it was not the game, she had intended to order … She had chosen the wrong letter next to the photo in the catalog, because she does not believe in glasses and was too embarrassed to call the call center and Penny return. "Besides," she said, " I have trouble understanding the phone. I guess they must have a lot of Indians and Pakistanis living in Chicago. ") I did not how I would be able to walk into the dining room every day and see my beautiful cherry wood table covered dress Ugly Betty.
My parents came to live with us nine years ago. At the time, all of their grandchildren were young adults, and during their working years, they do not have as much time as wanted to enjoy ten grandchildren. After retiring, they were excited to learn that I was expecting a little surprise. We invited them to come live with us, and they did so. Little Alex came, and my parents were doting on her eight years.
Mom and Dad owned a florist and nursery for more than a quarter of a century, and were disappointed that children none of us or one of the grandchildren, in care the least about the company. We all had our own dreams and goals, and other to hope for a little financial success along the way, none of our dreams because anything Green. And then Alex came with a big green thumb, and soon grandfather became her best bud, and she hers. While gardening, grandfather also taught him a few choice words that we would rather not talk about it.
Grandmother gave Alex all empty bottles of perfume, although not quite empty, just enough to spray the rest of her stuffed animals. room Alex feels a part that, shall we say, would be best suited for red velvet curtains, purple silk sheets, pink pillows and Sultan. When Alex asked if his grandfather plants died in his room, he waddles in and takes a look. "They're fine," he said. "They go out of him." So she continues to keep all five dead plants in the windowsill, because grandfather knows best.
My parents both have a heart gold and would do anything for us, here is a perfect example. My husband and I love taking care of my parents financially so they can use their money themselves. Once when we were discussing an ATM card magnetic strip does not work, we determined that we would have to go to the bank and replace it. Dad was hard of hearing and thinking we have money problems. He opened his wallet (I had never seen many butterflies fly in one place!) And the cracked leather wallet creaked open, he gave us a five dollar bill. What a dude! (In fairness, he thinks a liter of milk and two loaves of bread can be made to a dollar, and two males is a tip on JD Rockefeller companies a $ 30 restaurant tab.)
Mom insists on making all the dishes. It becomes really angry against me if I even try to wash a dish. Mom had recently cataract surgery, and says she can see very well, thank you very much, but when she washes and dries the dishes, you can read braille off the stuck on food that accidentally missing. She did not know until late at night after having slept, I wash the dishes again.
My parents have got slower, more relaxed, and even bought a new car, something they had never done during their entire fifty-nine years together, even though none of them drives. My husband and I had to hide our laughter when they chose a brand new black car … with chrome spinning. My mother insisted on them. She did not know they were for young guys and car shows. For her, they slam the high society, and "they are just enough."
My brothers and sisters call from time to time, wondering how everything goes. But they do want really know the truth. They want to live their lives and talk with Mom and Dad, but do not want to hear about medical appointments and others. They know I'll take care of mom and dad. And I do not bother me at all. My parents took care of me all my life and I'm sure I had some features – and again – but loved me and supported me for who I was, and I do the same thing. I would not have to live elsewhere.
I remember as one child at the Lawrence Welk Show with them every week. I can still hear polka music in their room. In fact, I can still hear it now.
Polka music screams of their bedroom. It is far too strong, but unlike our teenagers screaming their music (I use the term loosely) for reasons of the revolt, in this case, because Daddy can not hear well. I open the door of their room greenhouse effect and see my daughter jumping along the Begin the Beguine Grandma and Grandpa bed as she watches an old Lawrence Welk re with them. Dad is sitting in its cradle, dance with only his feet as mother dances with only right cute little arms and fingers hanging. "Mom, look who is on television," Alex shouted with joy as much as a seventh grader who has take a glimpse of Justin Timberlake. "It's-a-Sissy and Bobby are one! They dance!
I took my father by his fragile little arm and pull me. "Can I have this dance?" He smiled and said: "I hoped you would ask that, Baby Girl. My dance card open! "And we do a little spinning and laughing. And right now, nothing else matters. Not slick, not crispy dishes, the funny smells funny or opinions. Nothing matters except I dance with the first man in this world who never loved me as his faithful wife and loving look, and while the little girl who has momentarily stopped jumping on the bed, which leads to his memory is a memory of hers. This is what life is like living with my parents.
