DATELINE: IRVINE, CA …
One of the most important concepts they teach new fathers is how to provide a safe environment and keep the baby safely. The holidays are very busy and it is more difficult than ever to keep the baby away from choking and other hazards.
Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for new dads and author of two books on fatherhood, advice and sharing his second book, Crash Course for new fathers – Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets to keep your baby safe during the holidays:
Toxins. Treating the house before the holidays? Giving a manicure before going this Christmas? Paints and lacquers, varnish same solvent and nails should not be used near your baby. A newborn's immune system is not fully developed, and these substances can be harmful even in small doses.
Smoking. Although you and your spouse may not smoke, visiting relatives may not have a problem with the lighting around your baby. Unlike you, your baby can not get out of danger. Ask smokers to take visit outside or the garage, away from your baby's lungs.
Pockets. It is always gay with a house full of family and friends to vacation. But with so many people moving, sitting and standing – be aware that things can fall from the pocket of your customers without anybody noticing. You can grab a small object and have it in his mouth before you know it. Even swallowing a penny of your baby may need to go through surgery. Stay informed and do not be afraid to ask your guests to empty their pockets before holding your baby.
Salt and honey. Although you know the rules do not feed the salt and honey your baby, family and friends can not. Although you can not keep your sodium baby foods, excessive salt is harmful to the kidneys and pressure. And, until your baby turns one year, babies should NEVER be fed honey. Honey can cause infant botulism, which could lead to death. Make sure that the well-intentioned parents who may not be aware of the rules do not allow your baby the sample, even a piece of kitchen holiday without checking with you first.
Decorations. Christmas decorations are a feast for the eyes. Unfortunately, they are also a risk of choking Babies and toddlers can find small pieces and put in their mouths. To decorate your home, use the "drag-and-hide" technique. Take a tube of toilet paper and use it as a measuring device. If an object can slide along the tube, it can also slip your baby's breathing passage. Put these decorations that do not pass this test away until your baby is much older. And of course keep a close eye on the baby when relatives or friends visiting with older children who may have decorations and small toys around their homes.
