The red light is on – Do you depend?
In the first pages of the bestseller of Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, "there are a lot of people standing around outside a train stopped to look at a red light. Why the red light is on none of them know certainly, but it is a signal of danger ahead. Of course, none of them can confirm that there is indeed a danger on the track before or if it is just another malfunction caused by a deteriorating society in which many are willing to simply defer to others, accept that there are real and imminent danger that, if there is a problem for someone else to fix it.
When Dagny Taggart, a character in the novel that happens to be the vice president of operations for the railroad and the train actually stopped, the crew of questions about why they are arrested, it gets a lot of hemming and hawing on the situation. Nobody wants any authority to take responsibility for what might happen if they continue in spite of the red light. Nobody, that is, except Ms. Taggart.
She ordered them to resume the journey that leads to many questions including requests that if something should go wrong and that there is danger before it responsible because nobody wants to be responsible for the action. She, of course, the answers, of course, she will be responsible. Thus, the passengers back on board and crew plow back and forth on the main line and their destination – without incident mind you.
Had someone not stepped up and took the initiative, however, the train is still sitting on the edge of the runway, and everyone would late due to a false alarm. And if it had not been a person with a weight, but only the passengers themselves humble demanding travel continue to train crew would probably have been less inclined to accept because they were ultimately be responsible they have been in charge of the train. But since the vice president was there, and give orders, and who has done things different. The crew was no more responsible.
It is important to note that in this scene, however, that the train crew did not put too much control was cons ordered to continue, despite the red warning light. In fact, it seems they were well aware that there was no real danger and were simply not interested in guilt if they were to go wrong.
Can you say America Today in a few words?
Whenever I read "Atlas Shrugged" I always seem to find something new that has refer both to how we are going in America. That's why I try to read every two years. It is a laborious task sure. Rand prose is not exactly well-trained and mostly smooth. But the history lessons and more than compensate for the pain.
The analogy to the red light on our society today certainly is not, however, one of those things that I discovered recently. I thought a lot over the years.
We have become a nation full of red light observers. If it passes, many of us astute attention, even though we know that it's probably a false alarm. We do this because to ignore the red light means take responsibility for ignoring it. So, it is easier to huddled around the beacon and wait for it to give us permission to do or for someone having the power to tell us that he is entitled to overlook because it is clearly broken.
And then if there are problems ahead it is ok because we are not responsible. Someone else. If we get hurt there will always be someone to blame. Usually someone has very deep pockets.
Some of the red lights never seem to get out. They are red. Ten years ago we were given a red light, for example, the drilling for our own domestic oil resources in ANWR, a desolate landscape that is a mosquito breeding ground for a few months when the permafrost is actually defrosted. Now, we suffer not the supplies and said it is unnecessary to open the reserves now, because it would take years to recover. Perhaps even ten years we have been sitting on our hands, to extract the oil?
Obviously the problem is not that there is not enough oil to be made. The problem is that we met that first red light when we knew we should not. And now it is shown that the first red light is the problem, we just give another red light to enhance we should once again stand around respecting the previous, and obviously broken, light.
In places like Washington DC red light has been they say residents should not worry about defending themselves. Fortunately, many people have actually ignore that stupidity, but many others stood around watching that red light looks forward to being informed that they could carry weapons without the restrictions that have been keeping and bearing arms for defense impossible. As people stood around watching this crime the red light running rampant.
In the city of New London, Conn. He got a red light on the right of peoples to ownership, except when the government had a legitimate public use for it and paid them just to acquire it. Some fought against the respect that the red light only to the Supreme Court have the smack down. Other raised their hands and respected by the light that says the action. Today, all these assets that have been taken sitting underdeveloped as proponent has withdrawn from the agreement. An agreement that does not provide something for public use, but only for the benefit of politicians.
When the next red light will be only God knows. But when it is placed before, you blindly comply? Or will you boldly question and he knows if he does need to be ignored? And if you do, you accept the consequences or rewards of your choice?
