Pocket Watch Attire

What were the chain worn by men in the early 20th century?
Many photos of the dress of men of the Early 20th century to show them carrying one or two channels of their vests. (See the example of Sir Winston Churchill: http://hodja.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/churchill.jpg) I always understood that the chain should be a pocket watch. What was the other channel connected?
They were attached to a pocket watch and are called Alberts, after the husband of Queen Victoria. Usually, the watch has been in a jacket pocket and the chain was attached to a butonhole on the opposite side. Often, there was a medallion or badge hanging from the middle.
