Help me identify a TV show!?

I remember some TV show from my high school years. There was some “swashbuckling” guy. He is a woman chasing stud. He has a “pocket watch”, or something, that contains unearthly technology, and lets him travel though time. He has lost the book that contains the instructions to use the “watch”.

He is tasked with correcting history, but is not very good at it. He accidently picks up some orphaned little boy who is really smart, and knows history and sports. He more or less becomes the boys adopted father. He and the boy go on adventures. The guy chases women, and with the help of the boy saves history. What was the show called? I want to buy the DVD.

It was called “Voyagers.”

The guy who starred in it ended up accidentally killing himself on the set of either that show or another one, from what I recall.
