Tips for what I'm packing a solo Roughin it travel to Europe this summer? (Marks backpack, etc.?)

Wanderlust was kicked in real bad lately, and I finally decided to act on it. Thus, in preparation, while I'm sitting here months before the study of maps and language books, could you give me some advice on what type of backpack, sandals (and / or waterproof shoes) pocket knife, shows the waterproof, etc. I am buying? (And any other advice on what I should be with me in case I accidentally get lost in some random field French, German or Greek Forest River, would be much appreciated.) Strike em 'matches always struck me as a good idea (no pun intended) to have in my bag just in case, and one of those metal canteens of water, etc., but the brand names would be very helpful here! Thank you!
