Waltham Pocket Watch Marks

How do I know if an Elgin pocket watch 1908 is solid gold?

I have a 1908 Elgin pocket watch that I said is solid gold. So I have a Waltham Howard and I think so. I can not find any mention of them know. Is there a brand or lack of markings that indicate this? Ideas? I do not ACSESS to chemical tests.

Remove the case back. Most often, the case is live, or it is articulated, and forced open. The other alternative is a swing "in case", where you must remove the front panel (or unscrew the hinge or off), click on the crown, and the swing motion of the case. In all cases, you should look for the markings on the inside of the back. A housing Gold will be marked with the gold content (usually either 14K or 18K), the manufacturer of cases and the serial number of cases. Sometimes, they can say "Assayed". If the case says "justified" or "Guaranteed", this is probably not solid gold. If it says "guaranteed 20 years" or something like this, it is certainly not solid gold. Such cases are "rolled gold" which means they have a thin layer of gold, or about the thickness of a sheet of paper over a metal base in brass. Year warranty refers to the duration of the case is guaranteed wear without showing brass. In general, a watch in a gold filled case is worth more than an otherwise identical movement in a metal base ("silveroid") cases. It is much less, however, in a case of solid gold.
