What is A Chronograph Watch

The term chronograph is a derivative from two Greek expressions: “chornos” and “graphos”. The Greek word “chronos” means a interval of time or interval while the word “graphos” gives the meaning to sketch, to document or to note. If we literally define the English word chronograph, its historical meaning would be ” to record or note a space of time or a gap. The English word Chronograph is used as a noun and would mean a device recording or noting a space of time. When we hear of a present chronograph, immediately we obtain an idea of not merely a gadget but more explicitly a time giving device. So a more all-embracing meaning of a present chronograph should be “any time keeping tool which is used to record intervals or spaces of time”.
                Some times, a chronograph is also defined as a time keeping device, which has the task of a stopwatch. In reality, a stopwatch records or notes break of times but may not be time keeping. So the dissimilarity between a chronograph and a stopwatch is that a chronograph is a normal time keeping piece of equipment like a wristwatch, pocket watch, clock etc that has an added role of a stopwatch. Exactly speaking all chronographs are stopwatches but all stopwatches are not chronographs.
                 The original chronograph is said to have been invented in 1821 by a French master Russak that wrote time only by a pen attached to index hand. Contemporary Chronographs are more complicated and advanced in terms of accuracy, style and designs. Almost all reputed brands in the watches commerce make chronographs.
                 Chronograph may have a display, which is analogue, digital or mixed. An analogue chronograph is one, which shows both time and stopwatch functions with analogue hands. In analogue chronographs the centre key dial shows the time keeping functions while the three sub-dials in general show the stopwatch function.
                In a digital chronograph, the mechanism shows the time keeping and the stopwatch functions by with a digital display. Modern digital chronograph watches are fairly complex and may show the functions either with separate displays or by switching modes on a single display. Chronographs can be mixed i.e. digital-digital displays. Such chronograph watches use the analogue and digital displays independently.
               There are many brands, which make chronographs analogue, digital or mixed. The best-known chronographs are made in Switzerland, which have been popular since centuries for its robustness, precision, styles, designs, functions, and value for money.
With the advancement of time and the advancement of Science, the requirement of Chronometers and chronograph watches has considerably augmented and shall persist in the future. In the discipline of Aviation, Space exploring, Scuba Diving and various other fields have need of certified chronometers to be used in their usual operations. In fact  accurateness is the most essential requirement in the modern scientific era.
