Is my heart rate too high during cardio?

A little background info on me: 23 years old, 377 pounds, very out of shape.

I’ve been doing 20 minutes of cardio 5 days a week and weights three days a week. I got a heart rate monitor/wristwatch the other day and have been monitoring my calories burned and my heart rate.

Yesterday, I managed to do 30 consecutive minutes of cardio (20 minutes walking 3.5 mph and 10 minutes hitting a punching bag). My heart rate during this was an average of 165 bpm, sometimes getting up to 180. I’m out of shape, so anything remotely strenuous is going to make my heart rate skyrocket, but is this too high? The watch said I burned about 700 calories (it calculates based on heart rate I guess).

I’d rather do cardio at this intensity for a shorter period since I don’t always have the time or endurance to take an hour-long stroll, but I want to make sure I’m not hurting myself in the long run.

For those who are heart healthy, high intensity exercise, including cardio, has been shown time and again in studies to be superior to the old school slow to moderate longer cardio sessions for a variety of reasons. The big question is, are you heart healthy? Also, you do want to build up to a certain level of intensity rather than just hitting it straight from being non-active. If you happen to feel dizzy, faint or have any sort of pains you may want to consider slowing down some and working your way up over time. My suggestion is definitely see a physician and get clearance there first before hitting it too hard. If that person gives you the ok and you feel up to it, then you should have no problems with it. Good luck!
